SMS joined NeEC – Bioeconomy Seminar as a speaker on the topic ‘The Sustainable Development with Tapioca Value’

September 13th, 2021 – Mr. Khem Wanglee, Managing Director of SMS Corporation has joined the seminar and reveal the vision of development for a sustainable economy, on behalf of the leading modified Tapioca Starch Manufacturer. The topic was “Northeastern Economic, NeEC – Bioeconomy: Potential, Challenges, and Opportunities” held by the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC). The seminar was participated by many honored seniors from both government and private sector including Dr. Narongchai Akrasanee (Former Minister of Energy), Dr. Tossaporn Sirisamphan (Advisor of Prime Minister), and Mr. Issara Wongkusonkij (President of the Thai Chamber of Commerce)

The area of development (Corridor) has covered 4 economic provinces including Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, and Nong Khai where own the potential economy and generate industrial crop manufacturing such as cassava and sugarcanes; driving capability to various applications and prosperity for Northeastern. This corridor is aimed to be the center of the Northeastern economy, distributing to other districts and expanding to Laos (Democratic Republic of Laos). The total cassava production of Thailand is 29 million tons per year, the capacity of cassava from Northeastern is accounted for 16 million tons which is 57% of the total of Thailand’s production.

Revealing its versatility to an industrial scale, tapioca products are widely used in many applications in terms of value added by innovations. It results in the greater goods of tapioca such as products of the future like plant-based products which need high-technology & know-how expertise of modified tapioca starch to improve product quality that meets the needs of market demand. Following by biodegradable bags that are sustainable for the world in terms of reducing plastic waste. The tapioca starch is specially modified to use as starch plastic, compatible with other materials, producing biodegradable bags which guaranteed 100% degradation within 4 months without leaving microplastic to the environment, achieving the Bio-Circular Economy model.

All of these mentioned issues are emphasized to increase wealth, sustainable development, and prosperity of the Northeastern’s economy and add value to Thailand’s agriculture products which can further drive Thailand to be a hub of high-range innovation and potential platform of Southeast Asia.
